September brings a slightly gentler pace after the peak summer season, but still offers a great mix of local fêtes, autumn markets, cultural events, guided walks, food experiences and vide-greniers. It’s a lovely month to explore Normandy with fewer crowds while still enjoying plenty of local life.

🗓️ What’s On in September Near the Gîte
September in Normandy brings a shift in rhythm. The peak summer crowds ease, but the calendar stays full with village events, local markets, outdoor activities and cultural visits across La Manche.
A major highlight this month is the European Heritage Days (Journées Européennes du Patrimoine), taking place across the region with rare openings of castles, abbeys, museums, historic buildings and private sites that are normally closed to the public.

September is a fantastic late-season month for vide-greniers across Normandy, with village squares, seaside towns, sports grounds and rural communities still hosting regular events, but at a more relaxed pace than peak summer 🍂

Many Normandy vide-greniers begin very early, often from 6am or 7am for dedicated bargain hunters. The best finds usually disappear before lunchtime… along with the easiest parking 🚗
Expect everything from vintage Normandy furniture and French kitchenware to vinyl records, books, tools, linen, toys, military memorabilia and wonderfully puzzling treasures whose original purpose has long been forgotten.
Some events are intimate village gatherings with a handful of stalls and homemade cakes. Others fill entire town centres with hundreds of exhibitors, food stalls and occasional live entertainment throughout the day.
September’s softer light and cooler air make it one of the most comfortable months for browsing outdoor markets and village fêtes, but a light waterproof, layered clothing and some cash are still wise companions for a day exploring Normandy. ☀️🌦️
