A Quiet Base in Normandy for People Who Live Busy, Public Lives

Some people choose a holiday for the sights. Others choose it for the food.

And then there are people who choose a place because they want to disappear for a bit — not dramatically, not mysteriously, just quietly.

This is for people whose everyday lives are busy, visible, or public facing. People who spend a lot of time being “on” — answering questions, making decisions, being relied upon, being interviewed, being watched, or simply being visible.

There’s a particular kind of tiredness that comes from that. From questions that mean well (sometimes…) but still require energy.

When Not Being Noticed Is the Point

Rural Normandy — especially La Manche — is very good at offering relief from that kind of tiredness.

Here, people are busy. Fields need ploughing. Animals need feeding. Markets need running. Llamas need carrots (they always need carrots).

Nobody is scanning you for relevance. Nobody is seeing you, doing a double-take, and then asking for an autograph. Nobody is curious about your backstory. Nobody is “secretly” taking your photo on their iPhone (without your permission).

This corner of La Manche is particularly good at minding its own business.

Privacy by Design (Not by Accident)

This gîte was renovated with privacy in mind — intentionally, not as an afterthought. For you, and for us.

It isn’t attached to another room. It doesn’t share walls with strangers. And thanks to thick Norman stone walls, not a lot of noise carries anyway — no corridor traffic, no late-night footsteps, no muffled television from next door.

Most windows look out onto land and sky, not other people. The only exception is the gîte kitchen window, which faces the front garden of the main house — easily solved by closing the blind. Once that’s done, visual privacy is complete.

The gîte backs onto a secure gated driveway shared only with us. Guest parking is clearly allocated and arrivals are straightforward. You may occasionally pass us as we come and go — usually en route to some llama-related task — but we don’t hover, and we don’t linger (unless you want to ask Lee something about our rescue chickens or the weather — I warn you in advance, he can talk about both, a LOT).

People searching for a private gîte in Normandy often aren’t looking for luxury spas or hotel corridors. They’re looking for space, silence, and accommodation where nobody is listening through the walls.

A discreet countryside gîte, intentionally designed like that, with real privacy and no shared spaces — that’s the appeal.

Outdoor Space Without an Audience

The private enclosed garden sits alongside a quiet country lane and faces open farmland. Passing traffic is usually limited to the odd tractor, and even then the driver is far more interested in delivering animal feed than in you.

There is also private access to a field beside the llama paddock, overlooked by nobody at all — apart from maybe Janet the llama, who will eye you quizzically if you haven’t given her a carrot in the last five minutes.

It includes picnic benches, a splash pool, with more outdoor comforts to be added as our business grows.

You can sit outside in your own space, read, eat, do nothing at all, or (supervised) help feed the llamas.

They will notice you. They will not recognise you. They do not want your autograph. They only want carrots.

Arrival Without Fuss (or Attention)

There is no check-in time. You arrive any time after 4pm on day one of your holiday. That’s it. Simple.

We offer contact-free access via key code, so you can arrive quietly and settle in without coordinating timings or making polite small talk.

If you’d prefer to be welcomed, shown around, or helped with bags, that’s absolutely fine too — you just let us know in advance on the pre-arrival form.

Either way, your arrival is on your terms.

Booking Without Intrusion

We keep things simple. We don’t ask for your home address. Just a contact email and phone number, which aren’t stored after your stay.

If you book in as Mr and Mrs Smith, we don’t ask questions.

Payments are taken directly through the online booking platform, so we never see or store card details.

Low friction. Low curiosity. High discretion. (and yes, we would of course appreciate a good review — even if it’s under Mr & Mrs Smith 😉)

Inside: Practical, Comfortable, Human

Inside, the gîte is calm, spacious, and practical. There are proper beds, pre-made up according to the instructions you give us beforehand in the pre-arrival form.

The sofa is for real humans. Stretch out, curl up, or sprawl diagonally across it (which is actively encouraged).

The kitchen is a proper kitchen, with all the mod cons and all the equipment we think you’ll need — and more. No midnight scavenger hunts for a corkscrew.

The walk-in ground-floor shower is large, accessible, big enough for a wheelchair, and even big enough to share if that’s your thing (🔥🔥).

Upstairs, there’s a full-sized bath for long soaks and slow evenings.

There is a TV with French channels and satellite TV if you need to keep an eye on the news, as well as an internet radio for the same reason — or you can simply not switch them on at all if a true escape is what you’re after.

The gîte has fast Wi-Fi, secured with its own private router. If complete digital separation is needed, we can also set up a distinct private guest account on the router.

There’s a dedicated laptop workstation too, should you need it — and if you don’t, it’s easy to ignore.

This isn’t hotel living — it’s a private gîte designed for everyone.

A Quiet Base, Not an Itinerary

Some guests spend days at Montmartin-sur-Mer beach — which is rarely busy, and where you can always find space, at any time of year.

Some wander Coutances’ Thursday morning market. Others head out to the D-Day beaches, Mont-Saint-Michel, or Christian Dior’s house and museum in Granville — and if you visit out of season, even the famous sites are surprisingly calm.

Others stay close, read, walk the lanes, cook, or simply sit outside in their private space, watching the weather roll in.

There’s no correct way to use this place. That’s kind of the point.

Optional Add-Ons (When Thinking Feels Like Work)

For the days when decision-making feels like effort (for days when you don’t feel like public-ing 🙂), we offer a small number of optional add-ons. Not as a package. Not as an expectation.

They exist purely for the evenings when your energy levels have left the building. You are on holiday after all 😉

Options include:

– groceries delivered to your gîte before arrival, unpacked and ready
– a light snack delivered to your gîte before arrival when a full meal feels like too much
– a ready-made first-night meal so nobody has to decide anything
– packed lunches for easy days out
– a breakfast basket left quietly at the gîte front door, no getting dressed required
– an occasional delivered meal when cooking feels optional rather than essential

Use them. Ignore them. Mix and match.

Who This Suits

This is a quiet escape in rural Normandy for people who value calm, privacy, and a low-key base.

We accommodate groups of all kinds — families, friends, multi-generational stays, and people simply wanting space to themselves.

Some guests arrive needing space. Some arrive needing rest. Some simply want to be somewhere private that doesn’t require anything from them.

The Norman Approach

People here are generous, practical, and quietly kind.

They won’t ask who you are. They won’t ask why you’re here. They will gently remind you to weigh your vegetables before paying, because everyone forgets to do this (or is that just me again?).

You’re just another person staying somewhere quiet and enjoying the beautiful Normandy countryside in whatever mode takes your preference.

Why People Choose This Quiet Base

If you’re looking for a peaceful place to stay in Normandy, away from crowds, with real privacy and the freedom to enjoy your holiday without judgement, this is exactly that.

Close the gate. Shut the door. Take a breath. Relish being somewhere that doesn’t require anything from you.

Enjoy the holiday — your way.
