Planning a holiday to France? Whether you're travelling from the UK, the US, or elsewhere in Europe, a few key border changes are coming in 2025 — especially the EES and ETIAS systems. Knowing what to expect now will save you time (and stress) later.
If Normandy is on your route, having a peaceful, well-located base makes border changes far easier to navigate. Many of our guests choose our gîte for exactly that reason — quiet, private, and perfectly placed for ferries and airports, with clear travel guidance when you need it.
✈️ 1. Entry Rules by Country
🇬🇧 UK Travellers
- Visa-free short stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
- Your passport must be issued less than 10 years ago and be valid for at least 3 months after you leave France.
- From mid-2025, UK visitors will need ETIAS travel authorisation.
🇺🇸 US Travellers
- Visa-free travel for tourism, up to 90 days in 180.
- Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure.
- ETIAS approval required from mid-2025.
🇪🇺 EU Citizens
- No visa, ETIAS, or EES checks.
- Travel freely with a national ID card or passport.
🔍 2. EES (Entry/Exit System)
The Entry/Exit System (EES) will replace passport stamping for non-EU travellers. It is expected to launch in late 2025.
- You’ll scan your passport at an electronic gate.
- Your fingerprints will be taken on first entry.
- A facial image will be captured to confirm identity.
- EES automatically records your entry and exit dates.
➡️ Applies to UK, US and all non-EU visitors. EU citizens are exempt.
⛴ Border Modes Affected
EES will apply at:
- Airports
- Ferry ports (including Caen, Cherbourg & Le Havre)
- Eurotunnel terminals
- Land borders into the Schengen area
⏱ What to Expect at Ports & Airports
- First-time EES registration takes longer — expect queues, especially in summer.
- Future trips will be quicker, as biometrics are stored.
- Families must register each member, including children.
- No more passport stamping — all tracked digitally.
⚠️ Overstays
EES automatically flags anyone overstaying the 90/180-day rule. This may result in fines or future entry bans.
🌐 3. ETIAS (Travel Authorisation)
ETIAS = European Travel Information and Authorisation System
Starts: Mid–Late 2025
- Required for UK, US and 50+ other non-EU nationalities.
- Application is online and costs about €7.
- Valid for 3 years or until your passport expires.
- ETIAS is not a visa, but is mandatory.
🔗 Apply at the official site: https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias
⏳ Processing Time
- Most approvals are instant (within minutes).
- Some may take up to 30 days if additional checks are needed.
🛂 Passport Link
ETIAS is linked to your passport — if you renew your passport, you will need a new ETIAS.
🙅 Common Misunderstanding
ETIAS approval does not guarantee entry. Border officers can still refuse entry for security, documentation or financial reasons.
⚠️ Warning: ETIAS Scams
Many unofficial websites charge high fees for ETIAS applications. Only use the official EU site above.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Do children need ETIAS?
Yes — all non-EU travellers, including children, require ETIAS authorisation.
Do I need ETIAS if I travel to Normandy by ferry?
Yes — ETIAS applies for all travel modes, including ferries to Caen, Cherbourg and Le Havre.
Will EES cause delays?
During the first months, queues at busy ports (e.g., Dover, Folkestone, major airports) are expected as travellers register biometrics for the first time.
Does ETIAS replace a visa?
No. ETIAS is a travel authorisation, not a visa, but it is still mandatory.
Can border officers still refuse entry with ETIAS?
Yes — ETIAS approval does not override border officer checks.
Is the 90/180-day rule strict?
Yes — EES will make overstays much easier for authorities to detect automatically.
